Social experiment video. How do Australians react to Muslims?

Islamophobia is coined a term for prejudice against, hatred towards, or fear of the religion of Islam, Muslims, or of ethnic groups perceived to be Muslim. It is just sad to see people stereotyping Muslims to be terrorists and dangerous people, when in fact they are just as kind and loving as anybody else.
Many people join the Islamophobia bandwagon basing everything on what they see on TV. We should realize that many Muslims co-living with Christians have nothing to do with the ongoing war, and they should not be treated as “bad” people.
In other parts of the world, the alleged incompatibility of Islam with the other country’s historic gay-positive culture is a critical argument in anti-Islamic rhetoric. Some countries can hold onto its antiquated model of Christian-inflected secularism, or it can make space for new peoples and cultures, and become stronger and more vibrant as a result.
This social experiment just proved that people are changing as well, slowly accepting new cultures and socializing with other people regardless of race and/or religion.

Philippine communist rebels say peace talks may resume soon.

The Philippine government and communist rebels said Friday that formal negotiations to end a lengthy insurgency could restart shortly, though the rebels' armed wing announced it was beefing up its guerilla campaign.

Peace talks regarding one of the world's longest-running insurgencies, which have been on-and-off since the 1980s, may resume as early as the second half of January, Communist Party of the Philippines founder Jose Maria Sison said in a video message on Facebook.

Back-channel talks to "prepare the agenda" for formal negotiations have been ongoing since September and agreements on a ceasefire and social and economic reforms may be finished before President Benigno Aquino steps down in 2016, said Sison, who is in exile in the Netherlands.

Teresita Deles, presidential adviser on the peace process, did not give a timeline for the negotiations, but told AFP that Sison's remarks were "very positive" and indicated that common ground between the two sides was "broadening".

"Friends of the peace process have been shuttling between the two parties to explore possible parameters for restarting talks at the earliest time possible," Deles said of the back-channel negotiations.

"So far, feedback has been positive but there remain matters to be clarified in order to ensure that, if ever we do resume talks, it will not go the same way of an early, major impasse that has happened too often in the past," she said.
In a goodwill gesture amid a Christmas ceasefire, the rebels on Friday released two soldiers held captive for four months in the southern province of Bukidnon, military spokesman Brigadier General Restituto Padilla told AFP.

However, the communists' armed wing, the New People's Army (NPA), marked the 46th anniversary of its founding on Friday with a call to intensify its guerilla campaign.

"(We) must seize and control the initiative by launching more frequent and sustained tactical offensives with occasional blows to the head of the enemy," the group said in a statement.

Running for almost half a century, the communist insurgency has claimed 30,000 lives, according to military estimates.

The military declared a month-long ceasefire with the NPA for the Christmas holidays and Pope Francis's scheduled visit in January. The rebels said they would observe a shorter truce.

The NPA's strength has dwindled to 4,000 fighters from a peak of more than 26,000 in the late 1980s, according to the military.

Negotiations under Aquino faltered after the government turned down the rebels' demands that their detained comrades be released.
Separately however, Aquino has succeeded in forging a peace deal with Muslim rebels.
The agreement, signed in March, calls for the expansion of the autonomous Muslim region in the south and the disarming of thousands of guerilla fighters.

Maguindanao town celebrates unity through dancing

By Jake Soriano, VERA Files
Upi, Maguindanao—Drums beat loud and fast. A showcase of moves with the bilao and the indigenous basket biton for props, a splash of colors and folk rhythms thundering from the agong and the kulintang filled the streets of this town up in the mountains.

Already on its 12th installment, Upi’s Meguyaya festival on Monday had its biggest year yet with nine teams of street performers from Cotabato City, Datu Piang in Maguindanao and Esperanza in Sultan Kudarat, as well as a local team of grade school pupils.

The festival serves as a great reminder for Mindanao and the rest of the country that unity among people with different religious and cultural backgrounds is not only possible but is here a reality.

“We can’t help but reminisce the good relations, the good working together of everyone to make the Meguyaya festival more meaningful, especially for the tri-people of Upi,” said Mayor Ramon A. Piang Sr.

The mayor was referring to the lumad group Teduray whose thanksgiving feast the festival takes its name from, the Bangsamoro people, and the Christian settlers from Luzon and the Visayas.

Upi’s own delegation of elementary pupils in the end won the competition for their performance that highlighted the tri-people’s varied courtship and marriage rituals.
If we observe the Meguyaya festival closely, we see that it helps us unite and be one in our outlook for progress, development and harmony here in our town of Upi),” said Piang.
Datu Piang Mayor Genuine Piang Kamaong, a guest at the festival celebrations, praised the Meguyaya festival for being “a manifestation that the municipality of Upi is not only a peaceful municipality but also one of the progressive municipalities in the province of Maguindanao.”
The festival is now already making its name in important festivals across the country, he added.

In fact, earlier this year, the Meguyaya festival placed second in the annual Aliwan Fiesta street-dance championships in Manila presented by the Cultural Center of the Philippines, among others.
“Upi has actually leveled up in terms of tourism,” said Nelly Nita Dillera, the Department of Tourism’s director for Region 12 and chairperson of the board of judges of the Meguyaya street-dance competition.
“Festivals are just one area of tourism because they’re seasonal,” Dillera added, before further challenging the Upi local government to also capitalize on its other tourism potentials. “Hindi pa last ito (This won’t be the last),” promised Piang.“We will move on and upgrade our festival celebration.”

President Aquino signs distance learning law

BAGUIO CITY – Formal education is just a click away.
Online courses are now accepted as formal education with the signing of the distance learning law.

Authored by Baguio Rep. Nicasio Aliping Jr. and signed by President Aquino last Dec. 9, Republic Act 10650 has institutionalized distance education as a mode of delivery of open learning.

Distance education is a mode of delivering instruction, often on an individual basis, to students who are not physically present in a traditional setting such as a classroom.

Aliping noted that students who have no means to attend formal schools are hesitant to enroll in distance learning programs, fearing that courses offered through these programs will not be acceptable to companies.

But he said students need not worry anymore because RA 10650 has institutionalized distance learning.

“This law applies to public and private Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) that have existing open learning and distance education programs, and prospectively, other higher education institutions that will be authorized as qualified implementers of open learning and distance education programs,” said Aliping, vice chair of the House committee on higher and technical education.

RA 10650 mandates the Commission on Higher Education to assist HEIs in developing their capability to offer open learning distance education programs.

“It (also) mandates the University of the Philippines to lead in the development of the open distance learning and design model curricular programs that will serve as prototype programs to be implemented by other higher educational institutions,” Aliping added.

Several private schools are already providing distance learning through correspondence and online courses.

Graduates from these schools include people who have no time to attend regular classes like businessmen and senior citizens who want to have a bachelor’s degree.

“The passage of this law now allows us to have alternative quality programs to educate our countrymen who are seeking college education that will enable them to get better employment and gain better quality of life,” Aliping said.

'Floyd may be using Pacquiao to get Cinco de Mayo'

Floyd just wants the fight date, says Kellerman

MANILA, Philippines – Floyd Mayweather Jr. may only be using Manny Pacquiao as a ''pawn'' to get the May 2 fight date which coincides with the Mexican holiday ''Cinco de Mayo,'' according to HBO color commentator Max Kellerman.
Kellerman said the Cinco de Mayo weekend is important for Mayweather because the most popular boxer traditionally fights on that date.
“Cinco de Mayo, that weekend is the signature of the biggest fighter in boxing,” Kellerman said in Tha Boxing Voice.
Kellerman thinks Mayweather was already aware that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Miguel Cotto are fighting on the Cinco de Mayo weekend when the American boxer demanded that his super fight with Pacquiao take place on May 2.
“I believe the reason Floyd is so seriously engaging with the Pacquiao talks now is [he doesn’t want to lose the date to Cotto-Canelo], otherwise Floyd, for the first time in six or seven years, can get bumped by a bigger fight. So if he fights Pacquiao he bumps them,” speculated the analyst.
But Kellerman said Mayweather is likely to fight another boxer on May 2. He thinks “Money Mayweather” will be saving Pacquiao for a latter date for lengthier promotion time.
“I do not believe he will fight Pacquiao in May, it’s too soon to get the promotion going the way [it needs to be done], he’ll fight like Amir Khan or someone like that in May, but have that date for him using Pacquiao as leverage to scare the other fight off,” he said.
''Then, I believe Floyd and Pacquiao, if they both win their next fights, will fight in September [of next year].''
